History of Lyminge Scout Group

The first mention of Lyminge Scouts can be found in District Records in 1909. This is pretty much right back when scouting first began in 1907 with 20 boys and an experimental camp held during the first nine days of August, at Brownsea Island, Dorset. The camp was a great success and proved to its organiser, Robert Baden Powell, that his training and methods appealed to young people and really worked. In January 1908, he published the first edition of ‘Scouting for Boys’, issued in fortnightly parts at 4d each. It was an immediate success.

Originally we were part of the 15th Folkestone Scout Group, but in 1973 we broke away and formed our own group, the 1st Lyminge! The group was first set up by Freddy and Marion Hart and was based in the old village school, which sadly is no longer there. We moved into our own hut in 1983 on the current site by the Village Hall. The hut was a second hand old army hut at the time and 40 years later, with lots of tender loving care, is still going strong.

Scouting is open to all young people aged 4 to 25 of every faith or none, and every background. We have grown to approximately 80 young members, both boys and girls, who first joined the Scout Movement in 1976 as Venture Scouts and in 1991, UK Scouts became fully mixed. The only thing that limits our numbers is the adult leaders and helpers we always need to support the group.

With an international Membership of approximately 25 million, well over half a million in the UK alone, the Scout Movement is the world’s largest voluntary organisation for boys and girls. Impressive figures –

If you would like to join us, or you are interested in helping us out then please get in touch – we’d love to hear from you!
